How to Design a Dining Room
The dining room has evolved a lot over the years and has become more than just a space to eat. Nowadays, the dining room is a place to host guests, have heartfelt conversations, and where many happy memories are made. Not to mention the various hobbies that often take over the space! With the right design, a dining room can become the heart of the home.
From choosing the right dining room table and chairs, to ensuring there are adequate and flexible lighting options for every day of the week – in this article, we’re going to take you through the design details that matter the most.
Let’s explore How to Design a Dining Room!
Furniture Size
The most important aspect of designing a dining room is selecting a table that’s sized appropriately for the space. You will not believe the number of homes we’ve visited over the years where the dining table has been far too large for the space and completely engulfs the room.
As a general rule of thumb, there should be 36”-48” between the dining table and another obstacle, a wall or another piece of furniture. This will ensure there is plenty of space surrounding the table and chairs for people to comfortably move past.
On the subject of item placement, the light above the dining table should be centered on any windows that are centered on a wall, or a doorway into the space, if there’s a grand entrance. The dining table should be centered below the light fitting.
If you need a sideboard in the dining room, the most common mistake I see is people trying to add one where there simply isn’t enough room. Make sure it doesn’t make the table or lighting shift to accommodate it.
Lighting Layers
There is so much more to lighting a dining room than just one light fixture. It’s important to incorporate lighting layers to accommodate different moods.
Most people only think about using one central chandelier above the dining table, and that’s it. But it’s crucial to consider dimmers and other lighting too. If you’re planning to hang artwork or framed pieces on the walls, consider using wall sconces or picture lights to add ambience.
Install wafer lights or recessed lighting for additional light levels. These are particularly helpful for dark winter days.
Choosing Dining Chairs
When you’re choosing dining chairs, it’s important to consider who will be seated the most. Do you have kids to accommodate? This will influence the type of chairs best suited to the space. Dining chairs should be durable for the intended use.
We always recommend dining chairs that are easily cleanable (such as faux leather or wood) or that are upholstered with a performance fabric. This means that any spills can be spot-cleaned easily.
Our favorite dining chairs for busy family homes are leather or vegan leather upholstered chairs. Sometimes this is labeled as vinyl or PU leather.
Top Tip: Plan for about 30” per person for the seating width.
Decorative Touches
To finish off a dining room, consider adding an area rug to anchor the table and chairs. When selecting an area rug, make sure that the chairs can slide in and out from the table without catching on the edge of the rug. The biggest area rug you can afford that is larger than the table set up is ideal.
To dress the dining table for everyday use, you can use a table runner down the center and add a centerpiece bowl or vase with faux florals.
