How To Create A Cozy Basement
Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of working on a wide variety of family homes. From new construction homes to quick room refreshes to full remodels – you name it – I’ve worked on it! Each family we work with have their own stories, personalities, and requirements for the spaces we work on.
An area that has been extremely popular of late, is the basement!
Basements quickly become forgotten about areas of the home because they are out of sight (and therefore out of mind). But they hold a huge amount of potential! And could be valuable space for some, if they are designed correctly. The basements we have worked on vary greatly, but there’s been a common thread between them – the client has requested a cozy basement that they actually want to spend time in.
But how do you create a cozy space that is partially (or fully) underground? Not to mention one that the whole family will use regularly too!
It’s a tall order but one that my team and I have achieved time and time again.
This article will take you through the process of How to Create a Cozy Basement!
A Warm Color Palette
A cozy basement starts with a warm color palette. Lean into earthy tones like brown, beige, and deep shades of color like navy blue or burgundy red. For trim work, use off white, while the walls could be painted in a soft neutral color to help bounce natural lighting around the area.
These color combinations will help to reinforce a cozy looking and feeling basement.
Comfort is Key
Many people are seeking an alternate living space when finishing their basement. Creating a comfortable seating area will help to create a cozy basement!
Use deep cushioned sofas upholstered in dark fabrics and fun club accent style armchairs to really lean into a comfortable and cozy environment.
Creating a comfortable seating arrangement will be particularly helpful for those that intend to use their basement space as a family room, home theatre, or games area. Typically the more comfortable you can make the seating, the more your family will want to spend time there.
Remember to add some upholstered stools or ottomans so you can add extra casual seating when entertaining.
Ambient Lighting
Lighting plays a huge role in basements. Lack of lighting is often why many homeowners don’t spend time in their basements. And once you start to acknowledge the basement as an extension of the rest of the home, getting the lighting right seems less daunting.
Firstly, take a look at the ceiling lights. Do they provide good illumination to the entire space? If not, consider adding recessed ceiling lights around the perimeter of the space to increase light.
Then you can start to look at more ambient and decorative light fixtures, like lamps. Use table lamps and floor lamps to create a cozy ambience for afternoons and evenings. If you have a media wall you can add some wall sconces to them, or add picture lights above wall mounted artwork or frames.
These steps will all help to enhance the lighting in your basement, and give you the ability to create a more cozy atmosphere when needed.
Cozy Textiles
Finish off your basement with some cozy textiles! Thick knitted blankets, and soft plush pillows are great for using on sofas to add extra comfort.
Don’t forget about the windows! These are great opportunities for adding an extra element of softness to the basement. You could use window shades, or curtains to dress windows more elegantly. Choose a soft fabric to enhance the feeling of coziness.
