Cozy Reading Corners – Why and How to Create One

Over the last few years we have seen a huge interest from clients to create spaces that enhance – not only their everyday – but their hobbies and other interests, to support their wellbeing. A huge request we’ve seen is for cozy reading corners!

There are many studies online that show reading not only enhances our imagination and mental stimulation but also aids in stress reduction too. For those with stressful jobs, reading can be a great way to escape into another world for a few minutes.

With this increase in need for a cozy reading corner, we’ve absolutely nailed the brief from our clients! From dark and moody corners to more playful and light areas, we have a solution!

This article takes you through the various elements that should be included to create a Cozy Reading Corner, as we share our top tips and design ideas with you!

Comfort is Key

First things first – comfort is key when it comes to creating a cozy reading corner.

It’s important to choose a comfortable reading chair that will fit the space you have available. Choosing something that is too big for your corner will look overwhelming and cramped. Whereas a smaller chair with a footstool may be a better approach.

We love to use large circular armchairs in reading corners (if the space allows) as this will give the maximum level of comfort. However, an upholstered armchair with a deep seat is plenty for creating a cozy reading corner.

Support your reading chair of choice with soft decorative elements which we’ll look at next.

Navy Blue Corner

For this reading corner, we chose an armchair that was in keeping with the rest of the furniture but used an accent color for the upholstery. The navy blue works really well with the light shades of the space, and the dark bookcase behind. Luckily this corner has a wonderful window so natural light shines through to illuminate the armchair perfectly.

As this corner is a small one, the standard armchair size was ideal.

Accessorize

Next, it’s important to take a look at the accessories in the reading corner and choose pieces that will enhance comfort and coziness!

Start by choosing soft and plush decorative pillows for the reading chair. This will also enhance overall comfort when reading. To complement this, you may wish to finish off the chair with a throw blanket too. This will create a warm and cozy area, especially for the cooler months!

Basement Family Room

While this basement remodel has plenty of space and seating for entertaining friends and family, we also carved out little areas for solo enjoyment. Either side of the fireplace is a comfortable leather armchair, with footstools nearby, floor lamps, and natural lighting streaming through the windows.

This reading corner will be hugely popular in the winter months!

An Inspiring Backdrop

If the area allows, we like to design an inviting and inspiring backdrop to a reading corner. This could be various different elements, such as: a bookcase styled with decorative objects and books, framed artwork hung on the wall, or beautifully dressed windows. Make sure the windows are dressed well and practically so there is privacy for dark evenings.

Teen Bedroom Corner

For this teenager’s bedroom we designed, the reading corner has an inspiring backdrop of photographs, posters, and other inspiring framed elements. Not only does this help to decorate the space, it creates a cozy atmosphere for the corner.
