Open Shelving – 6 Things We Love About Them!

As an interior design studio, there are some fun elements we like to keep up our sleeves for clients whose homes are on the smaller side and need some innovative considerations. For some, storage space can be a premium, so it’s important to be creative with additional storage.

There’s something stylish and extremely practical about open shelving and incorporating it into any home. Open shelving can bring additional character into any space. It invites homeowners to display precious decorative items and provides opportunities for extra storage too.

In this article we’re going to share our favorite ways of using open shelving and why we love using them in our interior design projects! If these reasons ring true for you, open shelving could be the perfect addition for your home. Let’s discover more about open shelving!

1. Shelving is Decorative, Yet Functional

One of the main reasons we love open shelving is that it can be a great decorative addition to a space, while also providing a functional area for storage or displaying precious items.

For this basement remodel, we designed a custom built-in to surround the fireplace. With storage cabinets below and open shelving above, extra storage was achieved while also providing a large area for the client to display home accessories and decorative items purchased from treasured vacations.

We love to incorporate decorative accessories, use baskets on them for storage, display, and store books and mementos from travel or art from a favorite artist.

2. Metal Detailing on Shelves

Open shelving opens up a whole load of design elements that can be incorporated into it to add interest. From brass rails and gallery detailing to elevate a space, a truly custom and unique set of open shelving can be achieved. Metal detailing also contrasts beautifully with natural wood shelves and elevates the whole look.

3. Shelving Allows You To Rethink Storage

Another reason we love open shelving is that it gives us the opportunity to rethink storage solutions in the home. For those with cabinet space underneath open shelving, a ton of storage can become available. Plus – storage baskets are a great way of neatly storing belongings on open shelving units.

In a recent bathroom project, we installed open shelving directly next to the vanity unit so important items can be kept close by and within easy reach. This has made our client’s morning routine seamless, as it’s easy to see items needed.

We’ve also been known to install floating shelves in kitchens to display dishes. This is also helpful for keeping the dishes seen and easy to access in busy family homes.

4. Shelving Creates A Cozy Feeling

We love to use open shelving as a way to create a cozy feeling in a home too! This works particularly well for living rooms and reading corners. We recently installed a dark set of open shelving in this reading corner to help the nook to feel cozy and welcoming.

Even if you use natural wood shelving, the brown coloring is a warm tone that will create a similar effect to this too.

5. Shelving Adds Dimension

Builtins add depth to any space. Particularly when they have contrasting paint and finishes compared to the rest of the room. This will completely elevate any room!

For this family room, we painted the backs of the shelving green, while the shelves themselves are painted white, and the tops are cherry. This adds dimension to this family room and adds sophistication.

If you don’t have space for a builtin like this project, you can use floating shelves instead! Floating shelves can create various levels in a space so items can be layered and extra dimension can still be added too.

6. Shelving Creates Architectural Interest

Lastly, we love incorporating open shelving into spaces because it creates architectural interest in any room. There are lots of different molding options that can be used to elevate a unit – from ornate designs to more contemporary and simple moldings, there is something for every style!

Plus, if architectural detailing is added to open shelving this can integrate beautifully with the rest of the home to make everything look intentional and cohesive.
